2021-10-07 Meeting Minutes - Drivetrain

7 Days until First Draft CAD Due!!!

Goals

  • Review selections for actuators, encoders, and carbon fibre/aluminum
  • Check-in on CAD

Discussion

  1. CF tubes thoughts
  2. Rigidity thoughts?

Additional Tasks

  • CF testing plan → find out deformation tools/machines we have access to, come up with a test plan
  • Continue wheel tread investigation

Update & Action Items

MemberUpdateAction Items
  • Still debating extrusion VS CF
  • CAD both ideas for chassis, get opinions before review
amillsem@uwaterloo.ca (Wheel connections)
  • Feedback from Composites Canada!
    • Constraints for adhesive and adhering techniques is temperature-dependent (aluminum expands and contracts more at extreme temperatures, compared to CF)
      • The decision to bond aluminum on the inside VS outside should be based on what's easier for us
      • Leaning towards bonding aluminum on the inside. Easier to make the OD precise vs the ID
    • Recommended bond gap for ambient temperature is 1mm
    • Glue beads to maintain minimum adhesion thickness
  • Rough calculations for 32mm diameter
    • Conclusion: seems to be okay! Supporting the entire rover will still be weaker than CC's weakest tube

  • CAD integration
    • Verify wheel CAD
  • Finished Wheelez CAD

Emily Adam (Differential bar)

  • Motor selection, encoder selection
  • Send Asha information about motors and encoder
  • CAD differential
  • Order tubes, gearboxes, encoders
    • Investigation tools that we have access to: 3-point bending test, load testing, impact test (abuse it until it breaks), drop test
  • Read some rocker bogie papers

mapitzgr@uwaterloo.ca (Frame/structure)

  • Floating & fixed bearings investigation
  • CAD rocker-bogie structure, considering opportunities to integrated fixed-floating bearings
