Thickness/OD and Strength Relationship
Selections will be made for mechanical properties that satisfied the OD of 1.5" to 2" (32 to 50 mm) and variable thickness.
The plan is to see whether other URC teams had a way they would go about it.
Options for collecting info:
- Using Values to find relationship:
- Rock-West Composites has an extensive list of twill weave CFs, but with inconsistent values shown. I will try and find enough trends to create a relationship.
- McMaster-Carr Twill Weave CF - limited options but big list of info (mostly ranges):
- Example: 0.064" Thickness + 1.378" OD: https://www.mcmaster.com/5287T85/
- Contacted TA Regarding how to find relationship
- TA Conversation (please do not distribute attachments)
- Contacted other URC teams to ask how they reached their values (pending response)
- Did Simple Hand Calculations and confirmed using FEA
- MIchigan Team uses 2 x 2 Carbon Fiber Tubes
- Conversation with Michigan

Very Rough Calculations with variable angle and weight of the beams:
Hand Calculations (pending reviewing)
Next Steps are to put this on MatLab/Excel to be able to adjust angles, values etc.
Assumed weight of 1 2 x 4 beam through the following link: 2 x 4 CF Beam
