Overview of Setup Wizard Steps

Step 1: Choose Grading System

  • Weighted - This option is recommended. Grade items within your gradebook are assigned a Maximum Points value (the number you are grading out of) and a Weight (the percentage of the final grade or category that the item is worth).

    Example:

Assignments Category (20% of final grade)

    • Assignment 1 Item (Maximum Points: 40; 50% of Assignments)

    • Assignment 2 Item (Maximum Points: 52; 50% of Assignments)

Final Exam Item (Maximum Points: 100, 80% of final grade)

    Final Grade: out of 100%

  • Points - Please consult your CTE Liaison or a LEARN Help representative before choosing this option. Grade items within your gradebook are assigned a Maximum Points value. The Final Grade is calculated as the sum of all points in the gradebook.

    Example:

    Assignments Category

    • Assignment 1 Item (20 points)

    • Assignment 2 Item (20 points)

    Final Exam Item (200 points)

Final Grade: out of 240 points

  • Formula - Please consult your CTE Liaison or a LEARN Help representative before choosing this option. Final grade is determined by a custom defined formula. Grade items and categories use the Points system.

Step 2: Final Grade Released

Leave the default settings for this option. Since Quest is the official source for final grades for students, Waterloo LEARN has been configured so that both the Final Calculated Grade and the Final Adjusted Grade cannot be released to students. Therefore, changing these settings will have no effect on the student or the instructor view of grades.

Step 3: Grade Calculations

  • Ungraded Items

    • Drop ungraded items - Items that do not have a grade inputted are not counted in the final grade.

    • Treat ungraded items as 0 - This option is recommended. Items that do not have a grade inputted are counted as 0 in the final grade.

  • Automatically keep final grade updated - It is recommend to have this option on. This option will immediately update a student’s Final Calculated Grade any time one of their grades is set or changed.

Step 4: Choose Default Grade Scheme

There is only one organizational Grade Scheme, Percentage. It is recommend to use the Percentage scheme rather than a manually created scheme.

Step 5: Managing View Display Options

Here you can change how many decimal places are displayed to users grading a course. The default number of decimal places to show is 2.

Step 6: Student View Display Options

  • Grade Details

    • Points grade - This setting determines whether or not the Points grade value associated with a grade item is displayed in the student view of grades. It is on by default.

    • Weighted grade - This setting determines whether or not the Weighted grade value associated with a grade item is displayed in the student view of grades. It is on by default.

    • Grade scheme symbol - This setting determines whether or not the Grade scheme symbol associated with a grade item is displayed in the student view of grades. If you have chosen the Percentage scheme, then students will see the percentage achieved. It is on by default.

    • Grade scheme colour - This setting determines whether or not the grade scheme colour associated with a grade item is displayed in the student view of grades. If you have chosen the Percentage scheme, this option will highlight very high percentages in blue, somewhat high percentages in green, and lower percentages in pink. Note: The grade scheme colour can only be displayed if the grade scheme symbol is also displayed. It is off by default.

  • Number of decimal places to display - This setting controls how many decimals will be displayed in the student view of Grades. The default is 2.

  • Number of characters to display for Text items - This setting determines how many characters of a Text grade item display in the student view of Grades. The default is 50.

Step 7: Grades Setup Summary

Confirm your settings and click Finish.
