Grading Quizzes

Grading Quizzes

This article describes two options for grading quizzes. You can grade by a user's attempts or by question. Grading by a user's attempt allows you to grade all the questions on that specific attempt at the quiz, whereas grading by question allows you to grade the same question across all students' attempts.

Grade quizzes by user’s attempts

  1. Click on the drop-down menu arrow next to Submit in the top menu bar and choose Quizzes.

  2. Select the drop-down arrow next to the quiz you wish to mark and select Grade.

  3. Select either the Users tab or the Attempts tab to see a list of quiz attempts for each user.

  4. Click on an attempt for a particular user to begin grading the attempt.

  5. In the grading interface, you can see some summary information on the left hand side. Scroll down on the left side of the screen to see individual quiz questions and enter grades or feedback for each question.

    2. Use the Feedback field to provide qualitative feedback (optional).

  6. If you would like to view a different attempt by the student you can use the Attempt drop-down list at the top of the page.

  8. Within the right panel, the over all attempt grade is shown, and is automatically updated based on the grading of the individual questions in the quiz. If needed, you can manually adjust the overall grade on the quiz, and give any overall qualitative feedback in the Attempt Feedback field.

  9. When done, save your changes.

    1. If the feedback has not been published, click Save Draft if you want to publish the score later or Publish.

    2. If the feedback has been published, click Update to update the published feedback with your changes, or click Retract to unpublish the feedback and save your changes as a draft.

Grade quizzes by question

  1. Click on the drop-down menu arrow next to Submit in the top menu bar and choose Quizzes.

  2. Select the down arrow next to the quiz you wish to mark and select Grade.

  3. Select the Questions tab to view a list of all questions on the quiz.

  4. There is an option to Grade Individual Responses or, if the quiz contains questions that are auto-graded, you will have the option to Update All Attempts.

Grade Individual Responses

  1. Optionally, you can select Hide Learners' Names which allows you to grade questions without the names of the student being visible.

  2. Select the question you would like to grade. Enter a value in the Score field.

    1. (optional) Select Expand question feedback to provide qualitative feedback.

  3. By default, there is one user’s response per page. You can use the drop-down menu to change the number of responses you see.

    1.

  4. Click the Save button to return to the Grade Quiz page or the Save and Continue button to go to the next page.

  5. When done, click the Go back to Questions button.

  6. Warning:

    1. Using the arrows or page numbers at the upper left to move to another page will discard any unsaved changes without prompting you to save.

    2. Similarly, clicking the Go Back to Questions button with return to the Grade Quiz page will discard any unsaved changes.

Update All Attempts

This allows you to see the percentage of responses each option received as well as the correct answer. See re-grading quiz questions for detailed information.
