Part two - adding questions

The Quiz Tool is used to create and manage quiz assessments. You can use these tools to help evaluate student progress and learning outcomes. When creating a quiz it is important to consider the design of your question(s). There are many different question types available, so you can choose the ones that best suit your course content. The quiz tool consists of three main areas: creating/managing quizzes, the question library, and quiz statistics.

Creating a quiz involves two parts: creating/importing the quiz questions and selecting your desired quiz settings. This article describes how to add questions to a quiz. Please see part one to create your quiz.

Adding questions to your quiz

Login to LEARN and navigate to your course.

  1. In the center panel of your quiz page, you will see a section for Questions. In this section, you can Add Existing questions by clicking that option and choosing the source of the existing question. If your questions do not already exist, you can create new questions by clicking the option to Create New.

  2. Clicking the Add Existing button will display three options. Upload a File, Browser Question Library and Import from Learning Repository.

3. To Upload a File, ensure you are using the file format available when you select that option. Using the available download csv file will help ensure your questions are created in the quiz correctly.

4. If you have questions in another LEARN quiz or the Question Library, you have the option to Browse the Question Library and add them to your quiz.

5. Once you select the option to Browse the Question Library you will see a source menu near the top of the screen where you can select the quiz containing the questions you want to import.

6. After selecting the source of the questions, you want to import, you will see the list of questions available for import. You can choose to import some or all the questions available from the source. You will also be able to determine where the questions are placed in the course if you click the down arrow to the right of the Import button. If the location of the question is not relevant, click the Import button without using the down arrow and the questions will be placed in the quiz.

7. After you Import the questions, they will be visible in the questions section of the quiz. Questions imported from other quizzes will identify the source quiz when added to a new quiz.

8.. Clicking on a question added to the quiz will allow you to update or modify the question before releasing the quiz to students.

Note: When modifying a question that exists in multiple quizzes you will have the option to update all instances of the question when saving. This will only impact users who have not received the question already.

9. Creating new Quiz questions

When creating new questions, you will see the option to create the following question types:

  • Multiple choice

  • True or False

  • Fill in the Blanks

  • Multi-Select

Options available include:

  • Add feedback,

  • Add a hint

  • Add a short description

  • Add custom weights

  • Add enumeration.

Once you are done, be sure to Save before navigating away.

Placing an image in a quiz question

There may be occasions when you would like to include a visual in a Quiz question. This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of adding your image to the quiz question.

Before you create this quiz question, have your image file prepared:

  • Clarity – Make sure the image you use is clear and focused.

  • Size – You will be able to change the size during this process if needed, but if possible start with a large image.

  • Easy to understand – You may want to crop the image so that it is providing necessary information, and omitting anything extra.

To Place an image in a Quiz Question:

  1. Open the Edit screen for the Quiz you want to edit. Click on Add Existing or Create New

2. Choose whatever question type you require from the drop-down menu

3. In this example, we are creating a Written Response question type. Click the Question Text box and then click on the Insert Stuff icon to upload or choose an image file.

4. Select the location the file is stored, ie Course Offering Files

5. Browse to your file, select it and click Next

6. Now you are at the properties window. Complete the fields.
Note: Do not give the image a description that will reveal the quiz answer as the student will see the properties if they hover their mouse over the image

  • Link text: Image 1 (or something similar that won’t give away answers)

  • Alternate text: While you want the Alt text to be generic enough to not inadvertently give away an answer, you do still want to have enough information so that students with visual impairments who use screen readers can still participate effectively and equitably.

  • Check the box next to Lock aspect ratio

  • Width: 650 pixels is a good starting place

  • Click Refresh Preview

  • If your image does not work well with 650 pixels, try 450 or 300. We don’t recommend making an image larger than 650 pixels, or it may not display well in a browser.

  • Click Insert

Now you are back to your question edit screen, and you should see the image displayed. You have the following options before clicking Save. Refer to the image below:

  1. Write the question text here. In this example, students are filling in a response rather than answering a question. So we’ve entered “Question 1”.

  2. Students do not need an HTML editor unless you want them to upload something or use font tools. Typically this does not need to be checked.

  3. If you want to Allow learners to insert images and add attachments check the box.

  4. Enter your question point value

  5. Your image is displayed here, as the students would see it.

  6. The response field is displayed here, as the students would see it.

  7. Click Save when you are finished.

Once you have added questions to your quiz you can select then move your questions around within the quiz by selecting the Move To option.

12. The More Actions button will allow you to Delete the selected question(s), Toggle Bonus on for the question(s), Toggle Mandatory on, or Set Points.

13. From the Create New button you will also see the options to create a Section or a Question Pool.

14. To add a Section to a quiz, click the Create New button and choose Section from the list of options. This will open a new window where you can add a Section Title, Section Text and choose if you want to Hide Section Title from learners, Hide Section Text from learners, or if you want to Shuffle questions in this section.

Please note: You must first create and add questions to the question library to be able to populate the question pool.

15. To create a question pool, select the Create New button and choose Question Pool from the list of options. When the New Question Pool window opens you will see be required to add a Question Pool Title, select the Number of Questions to Select and the Points Per Question.
