Configure Outlook for Windows

Step-by-step guide

If this is your first time creating an Outlook profile, follow the instructions starting from Step 3, skipping Steps 1 and 2.

  1. Open the Outlook app

  2. If you already have a profile and are adding an account, Outlook will open and you can follow the steps below

    1. From the File tab, choose + Add Account

    2. Leave the Email Account option selected

    3. Leave Your Name blank

    4. Email Address: 8-character username @uwaterloo.ca (e.g. j25rober@uwaterloo.ca

    5. Enter your UWaterloo password twice (in the text boxes provided)

    6. Click Next

    7. You may be asked Allow this website to configure ... server settings? If so, click Allow

    8. You will be prompted for credentials:

      1. Click More choices

      2. Click Use a different account

      3. Username: 8-character username @uwaterloo.ca (e.g. j25rober@uwaterloo.ca

      4. Enter your password

      5. Check the checkbox, Remember my credentials

      6. Click OK

    9. Check the checkbox Change account settings

    10. Click Next

    11. Ensure Cached Exchange Mode is checked

    12. Drag the Mail to keep offline: slider to the far right so that is shows 'All'

    13. Click Finish

    14. You will then see a message: You must restart Outlook for these changes to take effect, click OK

    15. Close and then re-open Outlook

      1. It may take a few minutes for Outlook to complete the process and synchronize data with Exchange

    16. Recommended Junk mail settings in Outlook:

      1. In the Home tab

        1. Junk > Junk E-mail Options

        2. Under "Choose level of junk e-mail protection you want:" select:

          1. No Automatic Filtering...

      2. Click OK

  3. If you don't have a profile, when you open Outlook, you will be prompted to Create New Profile:

    1. Under Profile Name: enter a name (e.g. Outlook or MyMail) and click the OK button

    2. Leave the E-mail Account option selected

    3. Email Address: 8-character username @uwaterloo.ca (e.g. j25rober@uwaterloo.ca

    4. Click Next

    5. You may be asked Allow this website to configure ... server settings? If so, click Allow.

    6. You will then see a message: You must restart Outlook for these changes to take effect, click OK

    7. Click Change account settings checkbox

    8. Click Next

    9. Ensure Cached Exchange Mode is checked

    10. Drag the Mail to keep offline: slider to the far right so that is shows 'All'

    11. Click Finish

    12. Outlook will restart

If you are logged into a Nexus computer, you may not need to enter a password. If you are prompted to enter a password:

  1. Click More choices

  2. Click Use a different account

  3. Username: 8-character username @uwaterloo.ca (e.g. j25rober@uwaterloo.ca

  4. Enter your password

  5. Check the checkbox, Remember my credentials

  6. Click OK.

  7. Recommended Junk mail settings in Outlook:

    1. In the Home tab

    2. Junk > Junk E-mail Options

    3. Under "Choose level of junk e-mail protection you want:" select:

    4. No Automatic Filtering...

    5. Click OK
