File Naming Standard
Please read File Structure and File Naming before reading this document.
Types of Files Governed by Standard
Part Files
Part files will be classified as any Solidworks part file which is to be used in the main assembly of the rover which has been modeled by a member on the team. If an OTS component has to be machined, then it is classified as a part file. Prototype files are not classified as part files.
All part files must be assigned a number in the current 'Part Number Registration' page on confluence, This should be used for the file name of the part. Any part files which become obsolete shall be moved into archive. This does not include removing the part number from the registration.
Assembly Files
Assembly files will be classified as any Solidworks assembly file which is to be used in the main assembly of the rover which has been constructed by a member on the team. This does not include OTS Assemblies
All assembly files must be assigned a number in the current 'Assembly Number Registration' page on confluence, This should be used for the file name of the assembly. Any assemblies which become obsolete shall be moved into archive. This does not include removing the assembly number from the registration.
Template Files
Template files are used in master modeling. An example of what this is can be found here. These are generally not used by the team, but when they are it is good to have a standard for it. Template files have the same file extension as part files which is why it is important to make a distinction.
All template files must be assigned a number in the current 'Template Number Registration' page om confluence. This should be used for the file name of the assembly. Any templates which become obsolete shall be moved into the archive. This does not include removing the template number from the registration.
OTS Components
OTS Component files are classified as files which contain models of parts which can be purchased from suppliers and used directly on the main assembly without modification. These files should be named as '<Supplier Name> #<Supplier Part Number>" where supplier name is in all caps. For example this part will have a part name: "MCMASTER #3021N13" Note there is a space between the supplier and the hashtag, and no space after the hashtag.
Files Not Governed by Standard
Any files in the archive folder do not have to comply with the naming standard. The same is true for prototyping files, they can be named anything. Once the prototyping file is ready to be moved into the main assembly, it must be assigned a number according to the guide and must follow the standard, if it has not been properly named prior.
Non-Solidworks files do not have any naming scheme, as long as they are located correctly within the folder structure.
