Types of SharePoint sites

When choosing between the different types of SharePoint online sites, you’ll need to consider what you plan on using the site for, how you envision using the site, and what your desired outcomes are. This article provides an overview of the three types of sites.

To request a SharePoint site, please use our Jira portal to complete the form and select SharePoint online site request from the drop-down in the Please select the topic you require assistance with field.

Hub sites

Hub sites allow you to connect and organize multiple sites. Team sites and Communication sites connect to the Hub site. This type of site combines news and activities from the various connected sites and displays them on the Hub’s home page. When searching across the Hub site, the search results returned are from content on the current hub site and content on any associated site. The other types of sites can only be tied to one Hub, but not all sites need to be associated with a Hub site.  Viewers can only see content for which they have access.

Team sites

Team sites connect you and your team for collaborative work where you can work together on files as well as create and manages lists.

Collaboration is the primary feature of a team site. When using a team site, all the members will have the ability to create or edit content.

Communication sites

Communication sites allow you to broadcast information to others and are useful when you want to share information with the entire organization or when the intended audience is large.
