Password Protection

Password Protection

OpenEdX does not currently offer built-in password protection, to lock an assessment from students accessing it until a password is entered. This makes it difficult to restrict access to students from submitting the assessment from off-campus (home). This workaround method is proposed to add password protection to an assessment.

Grading - Assignment Type

For each assessment that you wish to lock with a password, create a separate Assignment Type.

  • From the CMS, go to SettingsGrading.

  • Click the +New Assignment Type button.

  • Enter the Assignment Type Name (e.g. Password Protection 1).

  • Enter the Abbreviation (e.g. PW1).

  • For the Weight of Total Grade enter 10. While it might be possible to enter a weighting of zero, that has not been tested yet.

  • Click the Save Changes button.

New Subsection

Create a Subsection only for the password entry.

  • Click the New Subsection button.

  • Name the Subsection (e.g. Password Protection).

  • Click the Configure button for the Subsection.

  • For the Grade as: drop-down, select the Assignment Type that was created previously (e.g. Password Protection 1).

  • Go to the ADVANCED tab.

  • Check Make this subsection available as a prerequisite to other content.

  • Click the Save button.

Set Prerequisite

Set the prerequisite for the assessment Subsection on which you would like to set a password lock.

  • Click the Configure button for the assessment Subsection.

  • Go to the ADVANCED tab.

  • Set the Prerequisite: drop-down to the name of the password entry Subsection (e.g. Password Protection).
