Password Protection
OpenEdX does not currently offer built-in password protection, to lock an assessment from students accessing it until a password is entered. This makes it difficult to restrict access to students from submitting the assessment from off-campus (home). This workaround method is proposed to add password protection to an assessment.
Grading - Assignment Type
For each assessment that you wish to lock with a password, create a separate Assignment Type.
From the CMS, go to Settings → Grading.
Click the +New Assignment Type button.
Enter the Assignment Type Name (e.g.
Password Protection 1
).Enter the Abbreviation (e.g.
PW1
).For the Weight of Total Grade enter
10
. While it might be possible to enter a weighting of zero, that has not been tested yet.Click the Save Changes button.
New Subsection
Create a Subsection only for the password entry.
Click the New Subsection button.
Name the Subsection (e.g.
Password Protection
).Click the Configure button for the Subsection.
For the Grade as: drop-down, select the Assignment Type that was created previously (e.g. Password Protection 1).
Go to the ADVANCED tab.
Check Make this subsection available as a prerequisite to other content.
Click the Save button.
Set Prerequisite
Set the prerequisite for the assessment Subsection on which you would like to set a password lock.
Click the Configure button for the assessment Subsection.
Go to the ADVANCED tab.
Set the Prerequisite: drop-down to the name of the password entry Subsection (e.g. Password Protection).
