Various Bearings

Ball Bearings

Deep Groove

  • The most common type of bearing used
  • Can withstand high speeds due to the low torque needed to operate, they have good radial and axial strength, they are very quiet and require low maintenance.
  • The bearings have a deep groove that the ball bearings roll in
  • Along with the groove the ball bearings sit in a cage that spaces the balls apart
  • The bearings also have either rubber or steel seals that are pre-lubricated with grease

Self-Aligning

  • Has two tracks for the ball bearings to sit in. The outer ring has a single curved track, this allows the inner ring with two tracks to deflect around the bearing center
  • This type of bearing is good for machined parts that have minor misalignments

Angular Contact

Single Row
    • Can take both radial and axial loads, but axial loads can be taken in one direction

    • The larger the contact angle is the more angular loads the bearing can withstand
    • For highspeed applications, a smaller contact angle is desired
    • the retainers are made from pressed steel, in high precision applications a polyamide resin cage is used

Double Row
    • Function like two single row angular contact side by side, but with one large outer ring
    • Unlike single row angular contact bearings, double row angular contact bearings can take axial loads in both directions

Single and Double Direction Thrust Ball Bearings

  • These bearings have two washer-like inner and outer rings with a track containing the ball bearings
  • Thrust ball bearings can a large amount of axial loads

Roller Bearings

Cylindrical Roller Bearings

  • The cylindrical rollers have linear contact with the tracks.
  • They can withstand high radial loads and are great for high speeds
  • These bearings high radial rigidity make them good for high precision machining tools

Cylindrical Roller Bearings

Spherical Roller Bearings

  • This type of roller bearing has barrel-shaped rollers, the inner ring has two tracks that the rollers sit-in.
  • The one outer track has a one spherical track
  • Like a self-aligning ball bearing the curved shape of the outer ring gives the bearing a self-aligning property
  • These bearings can withstand large radial loads and some axial loads in both directions

Conical Taper Roller Bearings

  • These bearing a conical track that a conical roller sits in.
  • The bearings can take high radial loads and some axial loads in one direction.
  • The bearings can be separated and can be mounted.

Needle Bearings

  • These bearings are essentially just cylindrical roller bearings, but the rollers are very slender, often their lengths are 3 to 10 times their diameters.
  • The build of the rollers makes them able to take a high radial load.
  • The bearing has many versions that don’t require an inner ring to function.

Spherical Thrust Bearings

  • The bearings have barrel-shaped rollers that are arranged around the center at an angle.
  • These bearings are self-aligning and can take a very high axial.
  • When there is an axial load this type of bearing can take a bit of radial load.
