Boot to USB drive

Power down the machine.

  • Press and release the power button. The power button blue light should turn off and be changed to orange. If the machine does not power down, hold the power button until its color changes to orange.

  • Insert the USB drive into the computer.

  • Press and release the power button. The power button should turn blue.

  • Press the F2 button repeatedly. This is to make the machine enter the BIOS settings. You should be prompted for a BIOS password.

  • Enter the BIOS password.

  • On the initial BIOS settings screen, there should be a Boot Order section. The USB drive should be listed under the UEFI tab of the Boot Order section.

  • Using the mouse, double-click on the entry for the USB drive under the UEFI tab. You should be prompted to save changes before booting.

  • Select Yes (Y) for saving changes before booting.

Bypassing Fast Boot

Machines from the labs may have been setup with Fast Boot. This prevents you from entering BIOS settings.

  • Ensure that the computer is not connected to the network (Ethernet). The computer may attempt to use its old IP address, which would cause a conflict with a machine using that IP address now.

  • If booting to a USB drive, insert the USB drive.

  • Boot the computer. Allow it to fully boot. The power button and the border should light up with blue light.

  • Power down the machine.

    • Press and hold the power button until the power button light turns orange. It should take about five seconds. Release the power button.

    • Wait 30 seconds to see if the machine turns itself back on. If it does, press and hold the power button again, until the power button light turns orange. Release the power button.

    • The machine should stay powered off.

  • Boot the machine into BIOS.

    • Press and release the power button to power on the machine.

    • As soon as you see the power button light turn blue, press and hold the power button. The power button will turn orange.

    • Continue to hold the power button after it turns orange. Watch for the the power button to turn off briefly and turn back on (orange).

    • Once you see the power button turn off briefly and turn back (orange color), release the power button.

    • Press the F2 and F3 keys repeatedly. After about 10 seconds you should be presented with a pop-up box to enter the BIOS password.

    • Enter the BIOS password.

  • Turn off Fast Boot:

    • Inside the BIOS, click the Advanced button.

    • Click the Boot button.

    • Click on the Boot Configuration tab.

    • Uncheck Fast Boot.

    • Press F10 to exit BIOS and save.

    • Click Yes to save changes.

  • Enter BIOS again:

    • After exiting BIOS and saving, the machine will reboot.

    • As soon as the machine starts to reboot, repeatedly press the F2 key. You should be presented with a pop-up box to enter the BIOS password.

    • Enter the BIOS password.
