Add a Google Analytics tracking ID
Google Analytics is used to keep track of the traffic and usage of your website.Â
Only Site owners have access to Google Analytics on WCMS sites. If you aren’t sure who is a site owner for a site you are working on, contact us at wcms@uwaterloo.ca and we can connect you with the right person.
Using an existing Google Analytics accountÂ
If you're using an existing tracking code you will need to update the URL in two places in your Google Universal Analytics account.Â
From Google Analytics, sign in with your Google account.Â
Select the Admin tab.Â
Select the Account and Property you wish to edit from the drop-down menus.Â
Select Property Settings.Â
Set Default URL to https:// and update the URL path.Â
On the Default View drop-down menu, select All Web Site Data.Â
Select Save.Â
Return to the Admin page and select View Settings under the All Web Site Data drop-down menu.Â
Set Website’s URL to https and update the URL path.Â
Select Save.Â
Return to the Admin page and select Tracking Info under the Property section.Â
Select Tracking Code.Â
Copy (Ctrl+C) the Tracking ID.Â
Paste the Tracking ID into your WCMS site (see how to add Google tracking ID to your site below).Â
Creating a new Google Analytics accountÂ
If you don’t have a Google Universal Analytics account set up for your site yet, you can follow the following instructions to set one up.Â
From Google Analytics, sign in with your Google (Gmail) account (or sign up for one).Â
Select Start measuring.
Enter your Account name.Â
Enter your Property name.Â
Set Reporting time zone to Canada and then Toronto.Â
Set the Currency to Canadian Dollar (CAD CA$).Â
Select Show advanced options.Â
Select Create a Universal Analytics property.Â
Enter the Website URL (everything following https://).Â
Select Create a Universal Analytics property only.Â
Set Industry Category to Jobs and Educations.Â
Select the Business size.Â
Select how you intend to use Google Analytics.Â
Select Create.Â
A prompt box will appear, change country/region to Canada.Â
Read the Google Analytics Terms of Service Agreement and select I Accept.Â
Select the Admin tab.Â
Under Property, select Tracking Info.Â
Select Tracking code.Â
Copy (Ctrl+C) the Tracking ID.Â
Paste the Tracking ID into your WCMS site.Â
Adding your Tracking ID to your WCMS siteÂ
Site owners can add a Google Analytics tracking code to their site.Â
From the administration bar, select Workbench, and then select My Dashboard.Â
Under Site Management menu, select Google Analytics and site ownership.Â
Paste (Ctrl+V) the Tracking ID in the Tracking ID field.Â
Optionally, provide your Google site ownership confirmation in the Google site ownership confirmation field.Â
Select Save configuration.Â
