University Wired 802.1x Network Connection

The following steps are provided to successfully connect to the University of Waterloo Wired 802.1x Network using Windows. 

  1. Enabling the Service 

  • On your machine, click the “Start” button and type “services.msc” in the search bar. 

  • Right click the “Services” app and choose “Run as Administrator”. 

  • A list of services will appear in a window. Right click “Wired AutoConfig” and select “Start”

  • If you want the service to start automatically, even if you restart your computer, you can right-click “Wired AutoConfig”, choose “Properties”, and change the Startup Type to “Automatic”  

  • You may now close the “Services” window. 

 

  1. Authenticating the Service 

  • Click the “Start” button and type “control.exe /name Microsoft.NetworkAndSharingCenter” into the search bar. Right click and “Run as Administrator” 

  • Click “Change adapter settings” on the left-hand menu. 

  • Right-click on “Ethernet” and click “Properties”. 

  • A window will appear titled “Ethernet Properties”. Click on the “Authentication” tab and ensure that the box beside “Enable IEEE 802.1X authentication” is checked. 

  • Under “Choose a network authentication method” make sure “Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)” is selected and then click “Settings”. 

  • A new window will appear titled “Protected EAP Properties”. Under “Trusted Root Certification Authorities” check the box beside “GlobalSign Root CA”. Under “Select Authentication Method” choose “Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)” from the dropdown window and then click “Configure”. 

  • Another window will appear. Ensure that the check-box "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)" is unchecked, then click “OK” and then “OK” once more. 

  • In the window titled “Ethernet Properties” from before, Click “Additional Settings”. 

  • Another window titled “Advanced Settings” will appear. Check the box beside “Specify authentication mode” and choose “User authentication” from the dropdown list. 

  • Click "Save Credentials" and enter your 8-character UWaterloo username (e.g. userid@uwaterloo.ca) and password. 

  • Click “OK” to close all the opened windows. Wait 15 seconds and then open an internet browser window to verify that the connection has been established. 

Mac

The following steps are provided to successfully connect to the University of Waterloo Wired 802.1x Network using Mac. 

  • Click to open the Apple Menu, then click “System Preferences”. 

  • Click “Network”

  • Select the Network Service you wish to use, in this case “Ethernet”. 

  • Click “Connect” 

  • If you have multiple profiles installed, click the 802.1X pop-up menu and select the profile you wish to use. Then click “Connect”

  • If you wish to connect automatically to the network as soon as it is detected next time, click “802.1x” and then click “Enable Automatic Connection”
