Purpose

How to clear web browser history + cookies and cache

Note: Clearing Cookies will log you out of your account and will require you to log back in. 

Step by Step

When to Clear Cookies and Cache :

Clearing cookies and cache prevents the user from seeing old versions of content on websites, protects the user from personal information theft, and helps to resolve browser errors and performance issues. 

If you notice any of the following, then consider clearing cookies and/or cache:

  • Slow browser speed

  • Error messages

  • Old versions of content

  • Login issues

Please note: By following the steps below, saved data within your browser (e.g., usernames and saved passwords, browser history, etc.) may be deleted.

Chrome

  1. Open Chrome.

  2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the browser.

  3. Click "Settings."

  4. Scroll down to the “Privacy and Security” section and select “Clear browsing data.”

  5. Click the "Advanced" tab.

  6. From the "Time range" drop-down, choose the time frame. "All time" is recommended.

  7. Make sure the following boxes are checked:

    1. "Browsing history"

    2. "Download history"

    3. "Cookies and other site data"

    4. "Cached images and files"

    5. Additional data types are also listed and can be checked, if applicable (e.g., "Passwords and other sign-in data")

  8. Click on "Clear Data."

  9. Restart Chrome.

Firefox:

  1. Open Firefox.

  2. Click the library button .

  3. Click "History," and then select "Clear Recent History".

  4. Next to "Time range to clear," select "Everything" from the drop-down menu.

  5. Make sure the following boxes under "History" are checked:

    1. "Browsing & Download History"

    2. "Active Logins"

    3. "Form & Search History"

    4. "Cookies"

    5. "Cache"

  6. Click "Ok".

  7. Restart Firefox.

Microsoft Edge (Chromium):

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.

  2. Click the three horizontal dots in the top-right corner of the browser.

  3. Click "History" and select “Clear browsing data.”

  4. From the "Time range" drop-down, choose the time frame. "All time" is recommended.

  5. Make sure the following boxes are checked:

    1. "Browsing History"

    2. "Download History"

    3. "Cookies and other site data"

    4. "Cached images and files"

  6. Click "Clear Now".

  7. Restart Microsoft Edge.

Safari: 

  1. Click "History" on the menu bar at the top of your screen and select "Clear History..."

  2. Next to the "Clear" button, use the drop-down menu to select "all history."

  3. Click "Clear History."

  4. Restart Safari.
