Administrative Account - UAC

User Account Control (UAC)

As part of the Health Computing Office security model, users (you) are setup as ‘Users’ (security group) on their computers. In order to access administrative functions in Windows, you are prompted by the UAC dialog box to authenticate. Administrative functions include, but are not limited to,

  • changing network settings

  • installing software

  • Copy or move files into the Program Files or Windows directory

How User Account Control works

When performing administrative functions in Windows, you need to enter a prefix containing the domain – which is the computer name e.g., hlth27-p01.uwaterloo.ca. To avoid typing the computer name each time you need to enter your administrator credentials, you can replace the computer name with a period.

Please Note: If you are not performing an administrative function, do not enter your Administrator username and password. Furthermore, if you are unfamiliar or do not recognize the application that is requiring elevated privileges do not provide your credentials.
