How to configure a Skype for business secondary ringer
Notes for this Guide
This guide is based on version Skype for Business for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2112 Build 16.0.14729.20224) 32-bit but should apply to both the MacOS and PC versions prior and after this version
Requirements:
Skype for Business installed on a PC or Mac desktop
A Headset connected to the machine you are configuring this on
A second audio output device such as external speakers, laptop speakers, Monitor speakers etc.
Overview
Skype for business has a functionality in the desktop application to allow for a secondary audio output to be used for ringing when you get a call. If you keep a headset constantly connected to your computer you may not hear or notice when you receive a call. This problem can be fixed by configuring skype to ring a different audio device such as external speakers at the same time when a call comes in. To configure a secondary ringer in skype follow the instructions below.
Steps
Open the skype application
Click on the gear icon to get into the menu options, if you click the gear the options window will open automatically but if you click the down arrow beside you will need to follow step 3.
on MACOS go to the menu Skype-> settings
Go to Tools -> Options
Select Audio device in the options window or on MACOS go to Audio and Video
In the Audio Deice settings there is a Secondary ringer section. On MACOS select the Ring on additional device.
If you check the also ring checkbox the dropdown box will be enabled and will show a list of all of your available audio devices that can be used as a ringer. On MacOS there will be a drop down beside “Also Ring on”
If you have multiple audio outputs and want to keep one muted all the time but want to use it as a ringer when you get calls, you can check the unmute when my phone rings if you typically keep this audio output muted but want it to be used only when desired or when you receive calls in skype for business.
