What is IEEE Standard?

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE SA) is an Operating Unit within IEEE that develops global standards in a broad range of industries, including power and energy, artificial intelligence systems, internet of things, consumer technology and consumer electronics, biomedical and health care, learning technology, information technology and robotics, telecommunication and home automation, automotive, transportation, home automation, nanotechnology, information assurance, emerging technologies, and many more. It is different from the IEEE references style when the essay is written.

IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) provides a, global, open, and collaborative platform for wireless communities that engage in, and enable the development of new, innovative, and relevant use cases and standards which, in turn, accelerate the time to market of consensus-developed technologies. 

Specific areas of focus include: 

  • Mobile broadband network evolution 
  • Technology interoperability
  • Enabling IoT and Smart Cities (including public safety) 

Inclusive to this is the ability to support addressing the following technological considerations:

  • Integration of networking, computing, and storage resources into one programmable, and unified infrastructure. This includes design principles such as resources, connectivity, and service enablers.
  • Multi-tenancy models
  • Sustainability, scalability, security, and privacy management
  • Spectrum
  • Software enablement for SDN, NFV, Mobile Edge, Fog Computing, Virtualization, etc.[8]

The Different Components of IEEE[9]

These different components in IEEE standard are usually grouped together at the very start of a document.

The title page is usually barebones and includes the publisher, year published, and other miscellaneous information. The table of contents helps user navigate the different sections of the standards and helps to quickly locate specific situations of interest. It also indexes any appendices or annexes for repeated reference.

The legal notice provides information about legal usage, copyright, patent rights distribution, and liability. This section is pertinent if you intent to copy any portion of the standard for your reference or if you intend to give it to a peer or colleague.  When in doubt, its always best to contact the standards association themselves or the UW Copyright Librarian. 

Finally, IEEE standards provide a list of contributors at the beginning of the document.

Preface or Document Changes

This section of the standard states the version of the document as well as what versions the document you are looking at supersedes. The preface will list any significant difference or addition between the standard that you are browsing and the version before it. This allow the user quick access to see what is new when using a brand new standard such that they don't have to search the entire document to find it. There is often also a notes section with miscellaneous remarks that the publisher and committees felt it was important to add.

This section can also serve as a list for extended reading where a method or technique relating to a situation or case may need to be researched further. This section also defines any terms or acronyms that the user will need to be familiar with when using the standard.

General Requirements

This section details the qualification requirements for standardization including symbols and terminology that must be used, any other standards that the object or act being standardized must conform to, selection of methods or design, and ideal processes (if its an act). This section varies greatly between standards, especially depending if it is an act or object that is being standardized.

Annexes, Indexes, or Post-Scripts

This section will usually make up the page majority of the entire document and includes any methods, auxiliary definitions related to the topic, any figures included in the standard (including graphs or diagrams), data tables, scientific method descriptions, imaging guidelines, and any other piece of information that may be directly relevant to the process of standardizing the act or object. This section comprises an incredible amount of bulk data and reference material that you may never use, but is useful to have just in case.

IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Standards

The IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) is a society of the IEEE. In recent years, the IEEE has placed great emphasis on Humanitarian Technology Activities, instituting the Humanitarian AdHoc Committee (HAHC) in 2011. As part of a strategic effort toward member engagement, HAHC instituted a program called Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT). Under the IEEE SIGHT, the Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) SIGHT group was formed with the vision to strengthen the world by solving the existing humanitarian challenges in the world.[3]

IEEE Vehicular Technology Society / Intelligent Transportation System Society Standards

The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) is one of the IEEE Societies, which develops standards under the auspices of the IEEE-SA. This is accomplished through the VTS Standards Committee. This committee is the Sponsor Committee, and is responsible for the development of standards within the Field of Interest of the Vehicular Technology Society. The Committee receives guidance from the VTS Board of Governors. In addition, the VTS Standards Committee may also be requested by IEEE-SA to develop standards in the field of Vehicular technology.[6]

Comparison between old IEEE and new IEEE

If students want to use IEEE standard, please look at the newest version in case there are some differences between the old and the new one.

IEEE Standards may be in one of three states of activity:
— Developing: Standards projects that have not yet been approved as standards.
— Active: Approved standards that have not been transferred to inactive status.
— Inactive: Standards that are no longer being reviewed or assessed for accuracy, relevance to current practices, or further applications; these standards are removed from active status (i.e., these standards are transferred from active to inactive status).[10]
