Rearrange menu items

A site's menu allows users to navigate through content. In WCMS 3, the navigation menu is found across the top of a webpage.

It is important to be careful when rearranging Menu items as changing a Menu item's level in the navigation structure will also change the URL. This may result in broken links when linking to that web page. To avoid broken links, we strongly recommend creating redirects for any old URLs to the new URL.

Rearrange Menu items

There are two ways to rearrange/change menu items in the WCMS. These include:

  • rearranging the menu from your Dashboard under Site management

  • changing the page url on the page itself, under Menu settings

Rearranging Menu from your Dashboard

  1. From the administration bar, select Workbench and then select My Dashboard.

  2. Under Site management menu, select Menus.

    • Tip #1: If you are making several changes to your menu, we recommend downloading the Menu report (CSV) for your site (found under the Site management menu) prior to adjusting the menu. This will give you an excel spreadsheet of all site URLs, allowing you to keep track of the old URLs, and to write down the corresponding new URL. Once you have made your menu changes you can use this spreadsheet as a guide for creating redirects.

  3. Beside Main navigation, select List links.

  4. Using the cross-arrow icon to the left of each menu item, drag and drop each item into the desired order.

    • Note: If you are missing the cross-arrow icons, select Hide row weights from the right hand corner to enable the cross-arrows to appear.

  5. Select Save.

  6. Now that the menu has been updated, you will need to activate the new URL(s). Begin by navigating to the content that was moved.

  7. For each page with a new URL, select Edit.

  8. Select Save and Publish. This will trigger the new URL.

    • Tip #2: Copy the new URL into the Menu report (CSV) spreadsheet (mentioned in Tip #1). Next, follow How to create a redirect to the new URL(s) to avoid Broken link errors.

To create Parent/Child items, drag and drop the item below and to the right of the intended Parent item. Child items will appear indented to the right.

Toggling the Enabled check box will determine whether or not the item will have a menu link in the main navigation.

The Information for menu can be rearranged by selecting List links beside Information for in the Site management menu.
