Often on campus and in software you’ll run into term codes representing the Winter / Spring / Fall term of a given year. These are generally expressed 1-3 ways:

Verbose Code

Winter 2024, Spring 2024, Fall 2024

Short Code

W24, S24, F24

Integer Code

1241, 1245, 1249

You’ll likely often find yourself needing to translate to and from the integer representation of terms. Let’s break down the code for Winter 2024 - 1241:

1 - The first digit is the Century. Our term counting starts at 1900 (0), so 2000 is (1) and 2100 will be (2)

24 - The next 2 digits are the last 2 digits of the year, 2024

1 - The final digit is the first month of the term. Winter term is January-April (1), Spring is May-August (5) and Fall is September-December (9)
