Corrosion

Overview

Corrosion is an electrochemical process where compounds are broken down into their elements, or they create new compounds through chemical reactions. Corrosion can cause massive problems as the strength of structural or essential components degrade. This leads to repairs, increased operating costs, and increased risks to safety. In Chemical Engineering, corrosion causes the most problems with piping and tubing. So, depending on the environment, and the substances in contact with pipes/tubes, different materials will have to be selected according to the risk of corrosion.
