Q: When do I use Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD)?
A: WVD is used to remotely access lab computers and software you might normally use when physically in the lab/on-campus.
However, WVD is not required for the following:
Checking your University email
Accessing Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel
Browsing the Internet
Accessing video and/or audio conferencing platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Webex, Zoom, Skype for Business (S4B)
Q: Are there any time limits to be aware of when using Windows Virtual Desktop?
A: The WVD application will timeout and disconnect you after 60 minutes of inactivity. If you lose Internet connectivity, your WVD session will stay active for 15 minutes allowing you to reconnect and continue where you left off.
Q: What do I need to know when requesting the installation of new or upgraded software on the Windows Virtual Desktop?
Notice of new and/or upgraded software for teaching purposes must be provided at least 30 days before the start of the academic term.
Requests received with less than 30 days notice may be fulfilled, but will be dependent on the current workload and availability of staff.
Notification of requirements is not a guarantee of installation as the nature of the request as well as the complexity of the software will need to be determined.
For all software requests, it is the responsibility of the requester to perform tests to verify that the installation is working correctly.
