Medicine

To practice as a doctor in Canada, you’ll need:

• A medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools that includes the Canada Sponsor Notes.

• An LMCC.

• Complete a discipline-appropriate postgraduate program in medicine and be evaluated by a recognized authority.

• Certification from the appropriate college.

Provinces and territories regulate the profession of medicine. If you’d like some support identifying the specific MRA licensing requirements, please contact the Centre for Career Development.

Please note that if you train internationally, the requirements to practice may vary. More specific details can be found on the Medical Council of Canada website.

To apply to an MD program, you may apply through:

• Ontario Medical School Application Service (OMSAS) for Ontario programs.

• Individual program websites for Canadian programs.

• American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) or Texas Medical & Dental School Application Services (TMDSAS) for most U.S. programs.

• Book an appointment with the Centre for Career Development or attend a workshop or event to explore your options further.

• Engage in clubs and events with other students who share your interests through Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA)

• Review different specialty certificates with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) etc.
