How to create an Embedded Call to Action (CTA)

Call to Action (CTAs) can be embedded in Web pages or other content types. For responsiveness, these CTAs are not fixed widths, rather they are fluid.

Here is an example of a CTA that links to our course brochure:

IT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (ITPD)

COURSE BROCHURE

When adding multiple CTAs to a page or sidebar, it is recommended to create a set of CTAs and embed them as a group (rather than adding them to the page individually). This will ensure they all move/size consistently.

Content Authors cannot create an Embedded Call to Action.

Create an Embedded Call to Action (CTA)

  1. From the Administration bar select 'My Workbench' > 'Create/Manage Content', select 'Embedded Call to Action'.

  2. Select 'Add a new Embedded Call to Action'.

  3. Enter a 'Title' (the Title won't display, it is used to reference the CTA in the management view).

  4. Select 'Add new Call to Action'.

  5. Choose a 'Theme' for the Call to Action (the default is uWaterloo (black and gold).

  6. Enter a 'Link' for the Call to Action.

    NOTES:

    • For an internal path, enter a Link title by typing the name of the page and selecting it from the auto-generated list, which will populate the URL field with the corresponding node number.

    • For an external URL, leave the Link title blank and enter a full URL.

    • For an email address, ensure 'mailto:' is included in the URL field (ex. mailto:wcms@uwaterloo.ca).

  7. Enter text for the Call to Action, 'Big text' is required, Small text is optional.NOTE: The recommended design calls for UPPERCASE TEXT in both of these fields.

  8. To create a set of CTAs, select 'Add another Call to Action' and follow steps 5-7 above.

  9. Select 'Save'.

Embed the Call to Action (CTA) on a Web page or other content type

You will need to know the node ID of the CTA in order to embed in another content type.

The node ID can be found by hovering the cursor over the 'Edit' tab and noting the number after "node" at the bottom left of the browser window,

or by looking in the URL address bar after clicking Edit.

The Call to Action can be embedded in another content type, i.e. in the sidebar of a Web page. Note: Content can be added above or below the Embedded CTA.

  1. Place the cursor where the Call to Action should be embedded and select the 'Add/Edit Call to Action icon' from the editing toolbar.

  2. Enter the CTA node ID number (just the number) in the 'Call to Action properties' field and select 'OK'.

  3. 'Save' and 'Publish'.

  4. When deleting Embedded Call to Action content, the content must be deleted from the management page and the embed removed from the page(s) on which it is embedded.

Call to Action (CTA) and Promotional items

For additional functionality, try embedding your CTA in a Promotional item!

Helpful tip: If you are having trouble finding where your CTA is embedded, try looking under the Promotional item content type.
