UHIP Extensions

What is it for?

If you are completing your program, the UHIP policy allows you to extend your coverage, up to a maximum period, so you can attend convocation and travel in Canada.

I am graduating soon. How do I apply for an extension?

You must apply for your extension while your UHIP coverage is still in effect.

Once you have selected the number of months of extension, it cannot be changed.

The documents you require to remain in Canada must be in effect during the extension period.

What do I need to do to apply for an extension?

Once the UHIP extension application form is available at the beginning of August, December and April, you can submit a request for an extension at the SFS help portal

Your payment for the UHIP extension must be posted on your student account before the UHIP extension application is processed. You will then see the UHIP charge posted on your student account. Two to three weeks after you submit your extension application form, Sun Life will send an email to your uWaterloo email address which includes your UHIP coverage card as an attachment.

What does UHIP extension cover?

UHIP extension coverage is for emergency care only (i.e. medical doctor appointments, hospital, diagnostic tests for an unexpected sickness or injury which requires immediate medical treatment).  You may wish to consider purchasing your own private insurance for other medical expenses.
