University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP)

What is it for?
The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is a mandatory health insurance plan for all international students. UHIP provides members and their eligible dependents basic medical coverage similar to what Ontario citizens and permanent residents receive under Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).

How do I apply for UHIP insurance?

All international students are automatically charged for UHIP. UHIP coverage is compulsory for international students beginning with the first term they are in Canada each policy year (September -August), regardless of their location in subsequent terms in that policy year. You will automatically be enrolled in the UHIP coverage after you have the registered status “Fees Arranged” if you are on an active term, or once you’ve paid the UHIP charge on your account during a work term, Inactive term or “off” term.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents who do not have OHIP coverage must self-enroll in UHIP while waiting for their OHIP to become effective.
