What are Bearings?

  • A machine element that constrains relative motion to only the desired motion

  • Reduces friction between moving parts

  • Provides free linear movement of the moving part or for free rotation around a fixed axis; or, it may prevent a motion by controlling the vectors of normal forces that bear on the moving parts

  • Experience loads in two basic directions


Characteristics of Bearings

General Bearing Terminology

Inner and Outer Race
      • Made From high-purity chrome allow
      • The rings have either a groove or track that allows the a ball bearing or a roller bearing to sit in
Retainer/Cage
      • Guides the rolling elements and keeps them spaced out

      • Typically made from steel

Rolling Elements
      • Can be either balls bearings or roller bearings

Radial/ Axial Forces
      • Radial forces are applied along the radius of the bearing or perpendicular to the shaft
      • Axial forces are applied along the axle through the bearing
