Task Description

  • The sensor head mount is a critical part of the science mechanism that is used to collect soil data

  • There are three main types of sensors located on this mount:

    • Soil moisture sensor (SEN0114)

    • CO2 sensor (SEN0219)

    • Temperature and humidity sensor (DHT22)

  • The current sensor head designed in CAD is incomplete (MR22-SC-A0036)

    • Sensor head parts are interfering with the main assembly, and all of the sensors may not be oriented properly with respect to soil samples

  • The sensor head should complete the following functions:

    • Allow the dinolite microscope camera to be rotated and refocused

    • Allow the moisture sensor to collect data from the soil

    • Allow the C02 sensor to collect data from soil

    • Allow the temperature and humidity sensor to collect data from the soil

  • The owner of this task would be responsible for redesigning the sensor head mount and ensuring all functions above are possible.


Task Breakdown

  •  Determine application specs for each sensor
  •  Design 3D printed sensor head mount to allow each sensor to interface with the soil properly
  •  Conduct a preliminary design review with the mech lead, and determine the scope of changes required if necessary
  •  Update the top-level CAD model of the 3D printed sensor head, ensure the functionality of the entire read head with dinolite camera
  •  Fabricate all required parts, and assemble them onto the science module

    • Waiting to get clarifications from the science lead on whether the DHT 22 sensor and CO2 sensor can be inserted right into the soil or only lowered near it

    • There was unclearness on the Science subteam as to whether the sensor needed to be submerged in soil or could detect from close proximity

      • Same unclearness also about whether it has to be in a vacuum (or sealed environment) or not

    • Hooked up CO2 sensor to an Arduino, and did some preliminary tests. Asked science lead to come in at some point and test.

    • Designed a design for how each sensor will be applied and created some designs for the entire sensor head

    • The sensor head CAD has been modified to effectively fit all the sensors but still needs to be printed

    • The sensor head needs to be tested: if the sealing on the CO2 sensor is not enough an o-ring could potentially be used to seal it more effectively

    • The sensor head is a little hard to attach to the flange due to the available bolts' length
