What are Bearings?
A machine element that constrains relative motion to only the desired motion
Reduces friction between moving parts
Provides free linear movement of the moving part or for free rotation around a fixed axis; or, it may prevent a motion by controlling the vectors of normal forces that bear on the moving parts
Experience loads in two basic directions

Characteristics of Bearings
General Bearing Terminology
Inner and Outer Race
- Made From high-purity chrome allow
- The rings have either a groove or track that allows the a ball bearing or a roller bearing to sit in
Retainer/Cage
Guides the rolling elements and keeps them spaced out
Typically made from steel
Rolling Elements
Can be either balls bearings or roller bearings
Radial/ Axial Forces
- Radial forces are applied along the radius of the bearing or perpendicular to the shaft
Axial forces are applied along the axle through the bearing
