When setting up multiple versions, you will need to specify a subset of students enrolled in each assessment, before creating the assessment. The students could be enrolled by name using the Custom option or by section.

Custom option

Step-by-step guide

Select the assignment. Choose Students from the left hand menu.

2. Click the Manage Students button in the top right.

3. Click the drop down arrow and choose Custom…

   

4. Manage the students in the next screen , click Save.

   

Section option

Import the list of students in a CSV file and create sections by adding a column at the end. Please see this article on Managing students in a course.
