Note: formerly known as Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD)

Q: When do I use Windows Azure Virtual Desktop (WVDAVD)?

A:WVD is used to remotely access lab computers and software you might normally use when physically in the lab/on-campus.

However, WVD is not required for the following:

...

Checking your University email

...

Accessing Microsoft 365 applications such as Word, Excel

...

Browsing the Internet

...

AVD is a cloud solution to support teaching applications which allow users to access the software from anywhere.

Q: Are there any time limits to be aware of when using Windows Virtual DesktopAVD?

A: The WVD application will timeout and disconnect you after 60 minutes of inactivity. If you lose Internet connectivity, your WVD session will stay active for 15 minutes allowing you to reconnect and continue where you left offis inactive for 15 minutes, your session will be in disconnect mode. You can restore your session within an hour. After one hour, however, the session will be terminated.

Q: What do I need to know when requesting the installation of new or upgraded software on the Windows Virtual Desktop?

...

AVD?

The AVD is upgraded each term.

  • Request for new and/or upgraded software for teaching purposes must be provided by the faculty computing unit at least 30 days before the start of the next academic term.

  • Requests received with less than 30 days notice may be fulfilled, but will be dependent on the current workload and availability of staff.

  • Notification of requirements is not a guarantee of installation as the nature of the request as well as the complexity of the software will need to be determined
    • Note that not all applications support the AVD multi-session environment.

  • For all software requests, it is the responsibility of the requester requestor to perform the tests to verify that the installation is working correctly. If you are planning to use WVD for exams, contact the IST Service Desk or rt-IST-ISC-iApps@rt.uwaterloo.ca
