A friendly email address is typically used because is it easy to remember. The friendly email address is implemented in WatIAM, the campus Identity and Access Management system. This is where both your friendly email address and your delivery address are set.

Note: In technical terms, for those that are interested, you would be setting the “mail” attribute of uwldap to your friendly email address and the “mailRoutingAddress” attribute of uwldap to your delivery address.

Using a friendly email address can better identify who an email is being sent to and who it is from. Friendly emails are not case sensitive (e.g. JaneFirstname.Doe Lastname is the same as janefirstname.doelastname).

Note

Creating a friendly email is optional however all individuals are provided with a fixed set of choices from friendly email address, based on your name, familiar name, initials, and surname.

If you choose a friendly address, the old long/short username options @uwaterloo.ca (which is all we have now) continue to work.
