How do I know if a college program is right for me?

College programs are specialized and often provide a practical component through co-op, internships and/or practicum experiences. After completing a university degree, it may be necessary to attend a college program to gain specialized education and training. You might need to attend a college program to receive the proper accreditation needed to pursue a particular career.

 

What are the different types of college programs available?

Many different types of college programs can be completed. According to Ontario Colleges, some examples include:

  • Certificate programs: 2 semesters

  • Diploma programs: 4 semesters

  • Advanced Diploma programs: 6 semesters

  • Degree programs: 4 years in length

  • Graduate Certificate programs: entrance requires successful completion of a post-secondary program (i.e., university degree or college certificate/diploma) before starting

  • Collaborative and Joint Degree programs: offered through a partnership by a college and university, leading to one or more academic credentials

  • Co-op programs: includes scheduled periods of employment (typically paid)

  • Apprenticeship Programs: learn a skilled trade under the supervision of an experienced tradesperson

How do I apply?

To apply to a college program, you may:

  1. Apply through ontariocolleges.ca for Ontario college programs

  2. Apply through individual program websites for programs not found within ontariocolleges.ca

The application process may consist of the following components:

  • Personal information

  • Resume/cover letter/personal statement

  • Education history and transcripts

  • Experiences

  • Supplemental application(s)
