Revisions and revision log message

Revisions and revision log message

Using clear revision log messages is essential for maintaining accurate and accountable website content. A meaningful log entry explains what was changed and why, helping site managers quickly understand the page’s history. It also supports collaboration, simplifies content reviews, and reduces confusion about updates.

Detailed logs make it easier to compare versions or restore previous content when needed. Consistent, clear messaging ensures the site remains reliable, transparent, and easy to maintain over time.

Revision log message

Users have two options to document their content changes using the Revision log message.

Revision log message in the Edit tab

The Revision log message field is on the right side when in the Edit tab.

The Revision log message field is located at the bottom beside the Save layout button.

Revision log message and the option to save or discard layout

Both of these fields are optional. If left blank, the revision will default to:
”Updated the Metatags (Hidden field for JSON support)” followed by which block type and fields were edited (if any) with the current state listed in brackets.
As you can see in the following examples of default revision log messages, the description of the edits are vague and may not be helpful if a user is trying to find a specific former version of the content.

Examples of default revision log messages

  • Updated the Published, Moderation state, Metatags (Hidden field for JSON support), Menu link, and Advanced configuration fields (Draft)

  • Updated the Metatags (Hidden field for JSON support) and Layout fields (Published)
