WCMS 3 Templates

WCMS 3 Templates

What are templates?

With WCMS 3 Templates, you can save individual sections or an entire page’s layout, including blocks and their contents, and easily add them elsewhere, across most content types.

This can be useful for multiple pages that follow the same formatting or include the same content (e.g. related links, links to social media, etc.).

Content added via templates is completely editable; one use case is to create content with placeholders, save it as a template, and have the user update as needed after placing. If you do not intend for the content in the template to be changed, it is best to ensure people are aware of this, as this cannot be enforced.

Supported content types

All content types are supported, excluding the Site footer, Sidebars and Expand/collapse groups.

Using templates

Creating a template for the library (Site managers and Content editors only)

  1. In a supported content type, go to an existing piece of content or create a new one.

  2. If you do not already have content that you want to turn into a template:

    1. Select +Add section and customize the section for your template.

    2. If desired, add select + Add block, select the block type and add content. Continue adding blocks to the section as needed.

    3. If you are intending to create a template for the entire layout, add additional sections as needed, with or without blocks.

  3. Save the template for either an individual section or the entire layout.

    1. For an individual section, select Add to Library next to the Section label.

    2. If saving the entire layout as a template, navigate to the top of the Layout tab (just under the page title) and select Add this template to library.

  4. Enter a Label to identify the template.

  5. Optionally, upload an image. This will appear with the section label when importing a section from the Library. It is recommended to have this image reflect the section layout (e.g. a screenshot of the template).

Editing a template

Note: This allows editing the Label, Image, Author, and Type for a saved template. The contents of a saved template cannot be changed - you would have to create a new template and remove the old one to do that.

  3. Select Edit.

    Edit
  4. As desired, edit the Label, Image, Author, and/or Type.

  5. Select Save.

Deleting a template

This only deletes the template from the Library - it will not remove any Layout content created using the template.

Note: This is a permanent action and cannot be undone.

  1. Navigate to the Section library.

  2. Navigate to the template you wish to delete.

  3. In the drop-down menu next to Edit, select Delete.

    Delete in Edit drop-down menu
  4. Confirm the deletion.
