Lost or Stolen Computing Equipment

If you believe your device or computer has been lost or stolen:

Important tips to prevent future loss

  • Lock your device: Always lock your laptop when you step away, even for a moment. Logout or shutdown if away from the computer for an extended period of time.

  • Use Full Disk Encryption to protect your data: Recommended Encryption Methods

  • Back up your data: Regularly back up your important files to an encrypted and secured external drive or cloud service.

  • Keep your system safe:

    • Keep your operating system and all software up to date, and  configured to receive automated updates.

    • Enable your firewall.

    • Install threat protection (e.g. anti-virus and anti-malware) software and configure it for real-time scanning.

  • Consider tracking software: Install free location-tracking software like Find My iPhone  to help locate a lost or stolen device.

  • Document the make, model, serial number, and MAC address of the system or mobile device.

  • University owned computers: it is required to install SentinelOne on the device

Note: All individuals are responsible for the security of university data to which they have access, regardless of the ownership of the device being used to access it.

  • All university owned equipment must have SentinelOne, BitLocker encryption and be managed by UW.

  • User owned equipment that are used for institutional work, need to have a minimum of a firewall, disk encryption (Recommended Encryption Methods) and anti-malware

    • They should not have SentinelOne due to licensing unless the machine was provided by UW to the user
