Remote Desktop (PC)

🖥️ Using Remote Desktop on a Windows PC

📌 Overview

Remote Desktop lets you access a Windows PC from another Windows device just like you're sitting in front of it.

🔗 Connect from Another Windows PC

  1. Open Start and search for Remote Desktop Connection.

  2. Enter the PC name or IP address of the computer you want to access.

    • PC name: the network name of the computer (e.g. health123-01.uwaterloo.ca).

    • Credentials: choose Ask when required or Add Credentials to save them.

      • Username options:

        • nexus\youruserid (e.g. nexus\myuserid)

        • youruserid@uwaterloo.ca (e.g. myuserid@uwaterloo.ca)

    • Friendly name: what you want the computer to appear as in your device list.

  3. Hit Connect.

  4. Enter your username and password if prompted.

You’ll see the remote desktop load and can use it normally.

🌐 Off-Campus Access

  • If you're off campus, you must connect to the VPN first before using Remote Desktop.

👍 Best Practices

  • Keep the remote PC powered on and connected.

  • Use strong passwords for remote access accounts.
