Health Research Storage Space (aka "Research Drive")
What is it?
Storage space leased from Information Systems & Technology (IST), under their Bulk storage purchasing program, for researchers to use via the campus network.
Why use it?
This storage is centrally managed, hosted in the EC2 data centre which has backup power, network and cooling for high availability. Data are mirrored to another data centre on campus. Data files are backed up every 4 hours. Off-campus access is provided over the UW Virtual Private Network (VPN)
How to get it?
Request from Health Computing Office. Once allocated, the research drive space can be mapped as a network drive on Windows or Mac computers. Health Computing will provide details when the space is created.
How much is available?
Depending upon the anticipated size of the project, initial allocations are usually 500GB with increases available on request. This is a shared resource and the amount allocated will depend on how much free space is available.
How to manage it?
Data are in separate shared folders for researchers and projects with restricted access to members of a designated security group. Folder access is granted upon request by the share owner (researcher) and performed by staff in the Health Computing Office. Health Computing sends reports to researchers once per term to review who has access to their folders.
