OneDrive: How to access Teams and SharePoint storage from OneDrive

Your UW OneDrive is for personal file storage. It is appropriate for storing files that you generally do not want others to be able to access. If you are working on files with others, or there are files that others may need to be able to access in your absence, these documents should be stored elsewhere such as Teams, SharePoint, Research Drive, or departmental R: drives.

Many applications have OneDrive storage as a default or primary storage location so it is easiest to save files there. This page provides instructions on how to make Teams and SharePoint storage locations available in your OneDrive account (without using your OneDrive storage allocation).

Adding a Teams folder to OneDrive

  1. Navigate to the Teams channel where your files are stored

  2. Click on the Files tab to reveal the folders

  3. [Optional] Open the folder that you want to be able to see in OneDrive

  4. On the ribbon at the top, click on the More Options link (). Important: Do not use the Sync option because that will sync the content only to the computer you are working on and will not place a link in OneDrive

  5. Click on the Add shortcut to OneDrive

Adding a SharePoint folder to OneDrive

  1. Navigate to the SharePoint site and Document Library where your files are stored

  2. [Optional] Open the folder that you want to be able to see in OneDrive

  3. On the ribbon at the top, click on the Add shortcut to OneDrive. Important: Do not use the Sync option because that will sync the content only to the computer you are working on and will not place a link in OneDrive

On your OneDrive you will now see a folder with the Team and Channel Name (or SharePoint Site and Folder Name) that you can open and work on documents there. The folder will have a link or or shortcut icon associated with it to indicate that it is located outside of your personal OneDrive

  1. Remember all members of the Team or SharePoint site who have access to the folder you have linked will have access to the files you save here. Put only files that you want to make available to others in this folder

  2. You can add multiple folders from other document library folders and channels, including Teams shared/private channels

  3. The linked folders will appear wherever you access your OneDrive, whether using Windows File Explorer, Mac Finder or the M365 website.
