Using multiple monitors in a remote desktop session

When working in a remote desktop session (RDP) and using more than one screen, you can extend the remote desktop across your monitors similar to being a work. You can have your remote desktop span across your multiple monitors at home (or the laptop and an external monitor).

 Windows

  1. Enter the name of the computer that you want to connect to

  2. Before connecting, click on the “Show Options” button in the lower left of the Remote Desktop Connection dailogue (see below)

The Remote Desktop Connection dialogue with the Show Options highlighted
  3. Click on the Display tab

  4. Check the option to “Use all my monitors for remote session” (see below)

Display tab with Use all my monitors for the remote session option highlighted
  5. Click Connect to start your remote desktop session

Mac OS

  1. Edit the desktop in the Microsoft Remote Desktop application by clicking on the pencil icon on the desktop thumbnail

  2. On the Edit PC dialogue, click on the Display tab

  3. Check the option to “Use all monitors” (see below)

  4. Click Save

  5. Use the thumbnail to connect to the computer with the new settings.
