  • When travelling over water, travel packs will not be instated due to changing geographic positioning. Travel packs are only available on land within the chosen country. Raw voice and data costs will be applied when using a device on any marine vessel. This can be extremely expensive. In the event of an emergency, WiFi data is the cost effective option (if applicable).

  • If you are travelling outside of Canada, consider the travel add-on plans.

  • Check Rogers' website or email telephoneadmin@uwaterloo.ca beforehand to make sure your device will work (probably will) and note any extra roaming charges.

  • Don't forget to pack your travel charger and adapter.

  • If you are using any third-party applications that are using data charges, you may want to turn off while travelling.

  • You might consider only using your device email address and turn off any forwarding of your Waterloo email accounts. In doing so, you may need to change your auto-signature and/or reply-to address (for BlackBerry login to your BlackBerry Internet Service account to do so).

  • Have you set your security password on your device?

  • We do not recommend taking some wireless devices when travelling internationally. These devices transfer large amounts of data and you will be sure to see overage charges. The highest international data travel pack is $225/75MB and this can be used up within 30 minutes. We suggest using a Blackberry if possible as they have a unique way of condensing data which will help keep the cost down (along with the addition of an appropriate travel package). Another way to save costs is to use a local WiFi. These may be free (in an airport) or require a small fee (i.e., in your hotel). However, if you connect to WiFi and the signal is weak, the device will switch back to the regular network where regular charges would be incurred.
